Today I started reading Hearing God by Dallas Willard. It is one of those books that has been sitting in a pile…on the “to read list” for some time.
As I opened it up and began to read this is what I started with…
“Hearing God? A daring idea, some would say – presumptuous and even dangerous. But what if we were made for it? What if the human system simply will not function properly without it? There are good reasons to think it will not. The fine texture as well as the grand movements of life show the need. It is not, in fact, more presumptuous and dangerous to undertake human existence without hearing God?”
I am excited to see where the book goes. I have lived some of my life while hearing clearly from God…it has set me free from doubt and allowed me to take bold steps, confident that God would provide and protect me and my family. I have made decisions based upon my own wisdom and strength and have lost many a nights sleep as I wondered if I had made the right decision. I have lived both sides of the fence…in my moments of wisdom and maturity I have learned to be still and listen for God’s leading, guiding and directing. My sense is that it will continue to be a struggle until the day that Christ calls me home to be with him.
All I can do is echo the words of the apostle Paul from Philippians chapter 3, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
I will share with you some of my insights from the book in the coming days.
