Advocating for Dan’s care is essential but often frustrating during hospital stays.
At this point in Dan’s cancer journey, hospital care has become crucial. During a hospital stay, we have found that advocating for Dan, sharing information that we have with doctors and nurses becomes somewhat of a dance.
We have to share important health information in a way that is not received as aggressive, but being unheard for long periods of time leads to communicating through frustration. Often, we have to speak again and again until finally one health provider listens and acts upon our information. Then, the health plan often changes in a positive direction.
Participating in this dance can be exhausting and feels like an uphill battle. But, advocating for the one you are caring for is essential for them to receive the correct care that they need.
