Few who know me would ever accuse me of being a great fan of rap music. In fact if you offered me $1,000,000 if I could name 10 rap artists in sixty seconds I would probably still have to make a car payment next month. (Although I did have a short season where I laid down some serious beat-box rhythms for a certain youth group while on retreat in Niagara Falls) With that said, I stumbled across the artist Lecrae today. It was not his music that got my attention but something he tweeted, “No amount of guilt can change the past. No amount of worry can change the future.”
It is not terribly profound, nor life changing. Yet in just three hours those words received 20,551 likes and was shared 4,653 times via Facebook! A simple posting on guilt and worry touched a nerve. Too often we chose to carry burdens that are not ours to carry. We can give them over to Jesus, lay them down at the foot of the cross and move through life free from guilt, free from worry, growing to experience what Jesus talked about as “life to the full.”
I was intrigued by Lecrae and spent some time learning about who he is today, I am glad I did. I will confess that my I-Pod will not likely be filled with much of his music…but there is something about the way this man thinks, speaks, and moves that I find myself celebrating. I found myself listening to a couple of interviews, one in particular where he spoke clearly and boldly about his faith and how it informed his music. As a person of faith I found myself cheering as a young man stood boldly and strong for their faith and was able to communicate clearly how their faith impacted and informed their life, “I had an encounter with Jesus and everything about me changed.” I really resonated with his words, “I am being me, I am not trying to be a picture of perfection.” “It is Jesus you should be following and not me.” “I am in this because I’m not perfect and I need someone to change me, not because I am the standard and everyone should look at me.”
Let me encourage you to take some time and check out the interview for yourself…
