Planning for the future includes the possibility of living in a house without Dan’s help. While wise it is emotionally challenging.
In her latest Caregiver Journal, Nancy talks about the challenges of planning for the future.
When Dan was diagnosed with cancer, we approached this “new normal” together, talking about what the future would hold for both of us. Dan began to plan for the day I might be living in our home alone. He started showing me how to do some of “his” tasks and making changes so the tasks would be easier for me. Sometimes I respond to his help by getting upset and not wanting to talk about it. My emotions interfere and make it hard for me to see the wisdom in planning for the future. But in the end, we come together, talk, and continue to move toward the future, whatever it may bring.
