Being Dan’s caregiver has caused me to grow in many ways. Sometimes I wish people would see the growth in me during this difficult season.
Walking alongside Dan while he has gone through multiple rounds of chemotherapy has meant I have learned to do new things. For example, I am now responsible for much of the heavy lifting around the house. Moving bags of mulch, salt for the water softener, 50 lb bags of birdseed, or salt for the driveway has become part of my job. I have learned how to lift these large bags with limited effort, even if I am grumbling. When I am out in the real world others do not see me as capable of heavy lifting. They still view me as someone who can only handle a five-pound box. I recognize that this is silly to care about this, yet, there are times I want people to see the reality of what I have learned to do while being a caregiver.
